Our journey to discover the projects of the #FromMilantotheWorld contest continues. We make a stop in Australia, in Melbourne, where Centre for Multicultural Youth presents the Welcome Football project.
The Centre for Multicultural Youth presents Welcome Football, a sporting and educational programme dedicated to newly-arrived youth from migrant and refugee backgrounds that uses the universal language of football and sport to support them as they are settling down and to foster greater social cohesion and participation in the life of their new community.
For more than 30 years they have been working to help young migrants or refugees build a life in Australia. Isolation, racism, discrimination and unemployment are major challenges they face in settling into their new country. CMY’s aim is to help these young people feel part of their new country.
The centre, founded by Carmel Guerra, believes strongly in respecting the human rights of all people for a fair and just society, in the importance of belonging and being able to participate fully in the community and also believes that diversity is a cornerstone of Australia’s success.
